Rwanda U17 qualify for AFCON after 15-year absence

Rwanda’s U17 national football team, Amavubi U17, have qualified for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Ethiopia 2-1 in the third-place playoff of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers.

The match was played at Kigali Pele Stadium on Monday afternoon, October 19, 2026, marking a significant milestone for Rwanda’s youth football as the team returns to the continental competition after 15 years.

The victory secured Rwanda’s qualification for the tournament alongside Uganda and Somalia, who also emerged as qualifiers from the CECAFA zone after reaching the final of the regional competition.

The 2027 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in Morocco between April and May 2027, bringing together some of the continent’s best young football talents.

Rwanda’s qualification represents an important achievement for the country’s youth football development and offers the young Amavubi an opportunity to compete on Africa’s biggest stage for emerging footballers.
