Tonzi makes history as the first Rwandan music artist to professionally publish a book – “AN OPEN JAIL: when the world crucifies you”

By Sibomana Emmanuel | Rwandan Entertainment Journalist & Mental Health Advocate

Gospel icon UWITONZE Clementine, known lovingly by her stage name TONZI, continues to inspire with her deeply spiritual and emotionally honest work, including her impactful book titled “An Open Jail – When the World Crucifies You.”

Renowned as one of Rwanda’s most respected and intellectually gifted public figures, TONZI consistently demonstrates grace, wisdom, and clarity in all her engagements. Whether through her music, writing, or conversations, she shares personal testimonies enriched with social insight and spiritual depth.

Her intelligence and emotional depth shine not only in her artistry but also in how she thoughtfully addresses challenges and connects with others, offering a powerful example of resilience and hope that transcends time and circumstance.

“This book includes my life story from childhood up to now. The writing journey alone took 13 years. I didn’t just write it—I lived it, survived it, and finally had the courage to speak it,” she shared, holding up a microphone with a printed copy of her book in front of hundreds of journalists, flashing cameras, voice recorders, television crews, major radio presenters, and some of the country’s most-followed YouTubers and Instagram Influencers. The moment was made even more touching as her beautiful daughters—who appeared to be between the ages of 9 and 11—stood proudly by her side, showing silent but powerful support. Their presence was a living testimony to the healing and strength TONZI has fought for over the years—not just for herself, but for the next generation.

A Prophetic Journey That Began in 2012

TONZI revealed that the inspiration for this book came through a divine voice she heard in 2012, a moment that left her spiritually shaken and physically overwhelmed.

“God said to me clearly, ‘Write a book and title it: An Open Jail – When the World Crucifies You.’ I was alone at that moment, but His light was so intense I lost strength and fell down. I knew from that day; this wasn’t going to be a book—it was going to be a mission.”

For 13 years, TONZI has been writing, pausing, praying, and rewriting. Every chapter in the book reflects a season of transformation. Some pages carry joy, others are soaked in sorrow. But all of them are anchored in the grace of God—the same grace she credits for saving her from what could have been a very dark end.

“If it wasn’t for God,” she said quietly, “I might be in drugs today, or lost in a rehab center. But God’s mercy held me together.”

Book Launch: August 14, 2025, at 5:30 PM in NYARUTARAMA

The official launch of An Open Jail is scheduled for Thursday, August 14, 2025, starting at 5:30 PM sharp, at Crown Conference Hall, Nyarutarama. The event will feature live readings from the book and a powerful performance of her latest single “URUFUNGUZO” (The Key)—a song she describes as the musical twin of the book and her fellow gospel artist will come to support her.

“This song came from the same journey. I was writing the book and at the same time, God gave me the song. URUFUNGUZO is the key that unlocks the jail.”

The book will be made available on Amazon and other global platforms, and physical copies will be distributed in libraries and bookstores across Rwanda. Discussions are also ongoing to have the book translated into other languages and later adapted into mentoring and healing programs targeting youth, women, men and artists battling emotional wounds in silence.

Mental Health and the Invisible Prison of Fame

What makes “An Open Jail” a book of global relevance is its courageous exploration of mental health—especially among celebrities, influencers, and creatives who are often forced to maintain a flawless public image while suffering emotionally in silence.

“This book talks about emotional wounds, depression, rejection, and spiritual attacks that many public figures go through—but never talk about,” TONZI explained. “So many are in an open jail. They walk freely but are not free inside. They need healing. Some are dying slowly, emotionally, but they don’t even realize it.”

TONZI calls out the pressure of perfection that fame demands, the betrayal by people who should protect you, and the mental fatigue of constantly living under public judgment. Her vulnerability breaks the silence that so many in the entertainment industry have kept locked away.

In a world where celebrity suicides, rehab admissions, and mental breakdowns are increasingly common, TONZI’s book enters the global conversation with both urgency and compassion. She is not merely telling her story—she’s standing in the gap for millions who are still afraid to share theirs.

Her Intelligence and Heart Won the Press

What made today’s press conference especially memorable was TONZI’s masterful way of handling the media. She answered sensitive, emotional, and spiritual questions with a calm mind and a wise heart. Her responses were not rehearsed—they were real. Many journalists later commented that it was one of the most professionally handled artist press sessions they’ve attended in Rwanda.

“She is not only a gospel legend; she’s a brilliant communicator. She speaks with light, depth, and confidence,” one gospel journalist said after the event.

Her ability to handle complex questions—from spirituality and mental health to industry pressures and personal trauma—confirmed her as a powerful voice for both faith and culture.

A New Standard for Rwandan Artists

TONZI is now the first Rwandan artist to professionally publish a book of this nature, not after university studies, but in the middle of her calling and creative journey. She has set a new standard for what it means to be an artist, proving that talent, healing, and impact don’t have to wait for a diploma—they begin with truth.

This is more than a personal milestone—it’s a cultural turning point. TONZI is showing Rwandan creatives and global audiences that vulnerability is strength, and that a gospel artist can also be a thought leader, healer, and published author.

A Final Word to Her Fellow Artists

“This book is for every public figure, every creative, every strong person who has secretly felt weak. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to fall. But don’t stay in that jail. God is offering the key. And I pray this book helps you find it.”
