A delegation from the United Nations is in the country for a ten-day visit to assess the Rwanda National Police (RNP) peacekeeping capabilities as the force prepares to deploy more peacekeepers.
The Formed Police Unit (FPU) Assessment and Advisory Visit (AAV) started on Monday, December 7, at the RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru where the UN team inspected and assessed the force’s Contingent Owned Equipment (CoE).
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) David Butare, Commissioner for Peace Support Operations in RNP, said that the team assesses the overall capability to deploy the pledged forces in a timely manner.
“They check the physical and mechanical state of CoE such as vehicles and other basic tools used by peacekeepers during and after work in a mission area, and operational readiness. It is all about the country’s capacity and readiness. They will also inspect Police contingents that are undergoing pre-deployment training at the Police Training School (PTS), Gishari,” said ACP Butare.
Rwanda maintains six contingents in South Sudan and Central African Republic (CAR); three in each mission.
Currently, Rwanda has more than 1,000 Police officers in various UN missions, including in CAR (MINUSCA), South Sudan (UNMISS), Darfur (UNAMID), Abyei (UNISFA) and Haiti (MINUJUSTH).
