The Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) has disbanded all leadership bodies of Rayon Sports Association and installed a five-member interim committee chaired by Abdallah Murenzi to guide the club through a restructuring phase expected to last three months.
The announcement came after a meeting held on Tuesday, November 25, during which RGB officials engaged the club’s leaders on long-standing governance problems. RGB noted that Rayon Sports has faced continuous management shortcomings that have weakened its performance, fractured internal cohesion, and limited its broader impact on national sports development.
RGB’s recent evaluation pointed to serious structural inefficiencies and leadership gaps in all the club’s organs. These issues were also raised by Members of Parliament on November 19 as they reviewed RGB’s 2024/25 performance report. MPs cautioned that persistent wrangles within Rayon Sports were harming both the club’s image and the national benefits associated with a strong sports sector.
As a result, RGB suspended the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Audit Committee and Conflict Resolution Committee. The newly established interim team—comprising Murenzi, Jean Bosco Nubumwe, Jose Akayezu, Olivier Gakwaya and Baptiste Nsabimana—immediately assumed responsibility for stabilising the club.
The committee has been assigned key duties, including revising the club’s statutes, reorganising and clarifying the roles of governance organs, supervising an external audit, and ensuring unity among members during the transition. It will also oversee both strategic decision-making and daily operations until new structures and leadership are formally instituted.
This move effectively sidelines current president Thaddee Twagirayezu and supreme organ chair Paul Muvunyi.
RGB said the intervention is intended to help Rayon Sports operate in a more professional, sustainable and legally compliant manner.
This is not the first time RGB has stepped in. In 2020, the previous leadership under Sadate Munyakazi was also dissolved, with Murenzi similarly tapped to lead the transitional team.
