Betting Boom in Rwanda Fuels Addiction and Economic Struggles Among Youth

The rapid expansion of Rwanda’s betting industry is raising alarms over its impact on the nation’s youth, many of whom are falling into cycles of addiction, financial hardship, and job loss.

Once seen as a form of entertainment or a quick path to wealth, betting has become a daily obsession for many young Rwandans. In Kigali, it’s common to see youths crowding betting shops from morning until late, often at the expense of their jobs and personal relationships. Some have gone as far as selling personal assets or misappropriating funds to fuel their gambling habits.

The government is responding with stricter regulations. In 2024, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) introduced a comprehensive gambling policy aimed at curbing addiction and enhancing oversight. The policy includes measures such as self-exclusion programs, spending limits, and educational campaigns targeting vulnerable groups.

Despite these efforts, the allure of betting remains strong, particularly among unemployed youth seeking quick financial gains. Experts warn that without continued intervention and public awareness, the social and economic consequences could deepen.

As Rwanda navigates the challenges posed by the burgeoning betting industry, balancing economic benefits with social responsibility remains a critical task.
